The final week of ISM we we're faced with the challenge of completing an online Social Media project. Although the project is meant to teach people the all important lesson of working with a group it did little for my education. The group was designed to help us understand social media of a company in more detail .
Our group picked American Express. The nice thing about group projects is that the work load is divided into smaller, more managable parts.
Our group, for the most part, work well together. One or two people were able to be the directors of the group and guide the rest of us that were not sure what to do. About an hour ago one member of our group logged on said he was unable to be in contact with the group and then copy and pasted my work and two other peoples work under that post. I don't know if that was by accident or not but it seemed a little odd...
I believe I remember this being the first semester of a group project of this kind.
I have taken MANY classes online and each one has had some type of group work on it. This baffels me. A big reason why people take online classes is because they have weird schedules or like the benefit of not having a meeting and do the class at their pass. Group projects, however, totally ignore those facts and force people to conform to certian times and leave the people with the regular schedules waiting on the people with the weird schedules.
Also, I got NOTHING from this project. I feel that this would have been more benefical as a singular project. My group told me to look on two different websites and give them feed back. I was never able to see the finished product and I do not understand the point of this lesson.
This class has been amazing.. up until this point. I'm still a fan of the class but I would say the group project thing needs some work.

Week 13:Clear
This week we discussed Social Media, which is any content that users create and share across many platforms on the internet. Last we touched on the topic, in a discussion post, about Google+ surpassing Facebook. I posted that I believed google had a very long way to go before it passed Facebook.
The biggest reason I highlighted, which was highlighted in this week's lesson, is switching costs. I stated that people have invested a lot of time and effort into Facebook. Switching to Google could mean the loss of contacts, photos and/or videos that they have uploaded. For people like me, they have countless photos they have upload or have been tagged in. Many of my friends have not made the transfer to Google, so Im staying put 'til my network is moved.
Facebook also has the network effects on its side. The exchange, it is so easy to exchange information and share things with friends. from 45 to 4,500, people might not be willing to leave those networks. This would be staying power. And finally, complementary benefits. Facebook has taken this aspect and used it to its every advantage. Companies use their facebook pages to connect with audiences by offering discounts or inside information for liking their pages. Facebook just bought Instagram, a popular camera app, which now allows users to directly upload their pictures.
Since Instagram was not available on android til recently I have not experience the seemingly addictive nature of this app, but many of my friends find it amazing!
This is my picture of a painting that I did. We all love facebook. Google+ would have to offset the huge switching costs by providing users with an awesome reason for leaving facebook.
Facebook has become so well known that just a simple F will tell people two things; We have a facebook and we want you to be on it!
And, Im here to tell Facebook. I'm logged on and I'm staying put! =]

Extra Credit: Google+
Google+ has a long way to go before it takes over Facebook status, no pun intended!
Although I have a google account and actually have this blog linked with it, I have not found it to be very user friendly. Not many of my friends are on it. I have two circles, friends and family. I believe I have a total of three friends. I don't agree with the article and the people who said they see google surpasing facebook. Im a big fan of facebook. Besides, people have spent time and effort to add and post millions of things. They had added friends, posted pictures, and connect with people they havent been ablt to connect with in years. I believe google is going to have to offer something pretty grand to make people walk away from 500 picutres, 1000 friends and much more.

Week 12: Clear
For week 12 we discussed several aspects of the Internet. It has come a long way from it's beginning and is becoming more and more intergrated into our lives.
The term "internet of things" is exciting but also crazy. Crazy in an awesome way. The internet of things was discussed briefly in a previous week lesson but was mentioned again this week.
It is the idea that in the, very near, future everything will be connected to the internet. It will allow us to be more productive. It allows for things to be more productive. One video that was watched for the week's lesson was describing how the water lines, air conditioning and refrigerator will all be connected and communicate with each other to make the home more productive and energy efficient.
When I was a little girl I remember riding the futuristic ride at Disney world that depicted different decades of our lives. From the 1940s to the 2000s. Since this was in 1994, give or take a year or two, they had a projected outlook for the 2020s. I remember the scene vividly in my mind. The scene was not alien like, there were no flying cars. It depicted a family of four and a grandmother all celebrating Thanksgiving. The dad and son were playing a video game and yelling their scores. The oven was ofcourse voice activated. As their scores went up so did the temp on the oven. They burned the turkey and had to order pizza.
It is amazing that when I was 5-6 I was blown away by the possiblitiy of a voice commanded appliance. Now, in the year 2012, we have talking phones, GPS, and soon will have smart houses- like the one Disney projected for 2020.
A recent article talks about how tablets like the iPad are the corner stones for future smart houses. We can control everything that happens with just a tap of our finger tips.

Week 10: muddy-clear-wow
This week we explored Microsoft Access.
I had never heard of this let alone used it. As Mr. Olson began to show us how this tool is used, I was unsure. It seemed similar to Excel at first, but then it was a whole world of computing!
My favorite part of this week was learning how to import the Excel spreadsheet and then making a report and or query about it.
Since, I'm a huge excel fan- I make an excel sheet for everything- this aspect was so exciting!
After being shown, the use of Access seems easy and fun!
Once you open Access you begin to make a new table or you can import the data from Excel.
After you have data, you can start a query under the create tab.
You can also make reports that can show specific desired information.
These tools can be helpful, not only to a teacher as in the example, to a business that wants to keep track of invoices, sales, employees, times, orders, and more!

Week 9: Clear
This week we learned about Moore's Law. This is an important concept in the computing world because it encourages growth. Growth, specifically at doubling at every 18 months. Moore's theory was "faster, cheaper" computing.
A website that clearly defines this idea, visually is the Intel website.

Excel Project
This week we were able to learn more about Excel and varies functions that can be performed. Simple functions of Excel are the varies formats for each cell. For example, when you type in 15% the cell automatically formats to percentage. The user can adjust the decimal point and how the percent will be used in the sheet.
As I worked through the project I reinforced the skills of adjusting the column and row width, inserting new columns, and formatting cells to reflect the correct data. A new aspect of Excel that I had been unaware before this lesson/project was the pivot tables. The pivot tables allow a user to compare data, find percentages throughout the data, and summarize by a sum, a count, an average and more.
An example of a pivot table would be:
Here, my boss would be able to see the selected demographics- by age grouped into decades. Then she would be able to see that the average percent increase was almost ninety-one percent in females ages 20-29.
This can be useful in a business that would want to see average sales, or average time of work per worker, etc.
As you can see, the user can also make the table appealing by adding colors and fonts.

Extra Credit: Avatar

I have created an avatar of myself with the Doppelme website. It was easy to use and was very quick. The experience was very cool. You register with your email address and then they send you a password. Once you are logged on you can access more features than just being on the site. That had many colors and accesories to choose from. I didn't use the accesories because I wanted my avatar to look business ready. So I put her in a colared shirt, with my favorite color of course. I would have liked to be able to change the shape of the face- like you can when you creat a Mii on the Wii.
I picked doppelme because it looked simple and the avatar didn't look to complicated.

Week 7: Presentation
This weeks project was to find a business appropriate message. Early this week I found a foundation that was geared to helping entrepreneurs. They have done awesome working, including sponsoring the Epcot Innoventions learning center in Disney World. They have donated 25 million dollars to 8 different universities of the course of time.
I decided to take one aspect of this company, its FastTrac program, and gear it to entrepreneurs who have businesses but don't know where to go from here.
I was able to critiques someone elses presentation along with my own. In this presentation, there were alot of words. I realized then that Don McMillan knew what he was talking about.
As the audience I was able to see some of the things a presenter might over look. Becoming the audience is a good way to avoid the "curse of knowledge" that the Heath brothers talk about in their book, Made to Stick.
While this presenters information was good and meaty, I was overwhelmed by the words and very little pictures.
I learned in my listening class last semester that humans can speak up to 100 words per minute while the brain has time to think of 500 words per minute. Pictures help to keep those words in the "oh and ah" area and out of the "man I'm hungry area, I wonder if this meeting is gonna have snacks at the end, should I wear blue shoes or red shoe... oo presentation, right" area.
Now that I have critiqued someone else and gained a little perspective, Ibegan to focus on my critique.
My presentation was perfect! -I WISH!
I began to see that I had to many words and only one or two pictures.
So I reworked it. I added a story to help with the emotional aspect of the presentation and added more pictures. Now, my audience can have a visual of what Im talking about.
I feel that my flow at first was skewed, I didnt have alot of detail of the main point I was making. So i had to add more information about the program.
I anticipated simple questions such as and?, why? What?
I direct my first question at my audience instead of raddling off facts.
I feel like the cookies would spark someones interest enough to listen at first and then stay for the rest of the story.
I feel im clear that im sharing about fastTrac growthventure.
Claims are validated from my story.
There is no clutter on my slides.
You can check out my video by clicking the link below!

Week 7: Clear
This week's discussion was about cloud computing. Cloud computing, along with other steps mangers can take, can decrease costs. Costs in electricity, training costs, software and hardware costs, etc.
The original cloud could probably be said to be the Internet. The basic idea of the cloud is that material used daily for a company, a class, or just personal use can be store outside of your computer and safely in another location; In the cloud!
There are three types of cloud computing:
PaaS, or Platform as a Service. This provides vendors with hardware and operating system. The benefits to this type is that the user is not responsible for the maintenance, upgrades or updates, or backups. Sometimes this type is referred to as Utility computing. Utility computing is basically the users software being run via the Internet.
DaaS, or Desktop as a Service. This provides an Operating system and apps. It is also scalable. which means, if you create one can ask the provider for 50 of the same thing the next day.
SaaS, or Software as a Service. This type provides everything. this is a per user per month subscription.
Cloud computing can be very beneficial to a business. It saves money and allows a company to run more apps or software than it could afford otherwise. Cloud computing isn't that new. We have used types of cloud computing when we used email. The data is stored somewhere else and doesn't take up memory on the device.
A manager does have to be cautious though. A company should never have so much of its data tied up into a program such as cloud computing that it would be devastating to either retrieve it or loss it all.

Week 6: Muddy
When we were discussing writing a program we touched on the programming language of C++ and C#.
I decided to do a little more research on what these two things meant. According to Msdn.microsoft.com, C++ was designed to be a low-level, platform nuetral, object-oriented programming language. Windows from the 1990s would be an example of this.
Now we have C#. this was created as a higher-level, component-oriented language.
There is not precise control like in C++ , it has a framework that helps the user focus on a larger picture. C++ allows the user to control everything, even the layout.
C# is also referred to as .NET on the msdn.mircrosoft.com website. An example of this would be Microsoft.

According to Computingverticals.com, Java, C#, C++ have similar languages which makes them easy to use. C# was made for the gaps that existed between C++ and VB, another programming language. C# is suppose to be for intermediate level use and more user friendly than other languages. C# borrows keywords from C++ so transferring is easier and programming becomes easier for users of C++ going to C#.

Week 5: Clear
I'm using Arial font for this weeks blog because I in fact do like the Little Mermaid! According to Dan McMillan's presentation about presentations, using different fonts not only can distract the audience but it can also say things about you.
I found this week to be very clear. I have taken public speaking and presentations were a big part of the grade.
Things I learned from that course that reiterated in this week's lesson were:
1) Avoid Clutter
2) Don't use crazy fonts or make your words move.
3) always make a presentation for your audience.
Things that were new this week:
1) Using Kuler.com to create your own background or theme colors
2) James Geary is the only one who used Prezi effectively!
There is one idea that needs to be made more clear for making a presentation. Just because the capability is in the software does not mean you have to use it!
I'm not a fan of prezi because people use all the features- and the features that we have just learned NOT to use!
For example, when you make your presentation zoom in and out... STOP! Your audience might have vertigo! (which I do!)
So your presentation could be telling me how to make $1 million, but to me your presentation looks like this:
I read "Made to Stick". It was awesome book. The thing I took away most was to be unexpected. The myths they used as examples were myths I had heard before. When creating a message it is best to use SUCCESs. My favorite one is Stories. I have been telling stories since I could talk. In high school, I was voted "best storyteller" because I always had a story to tell. It's cool to think that it will come in handy =]
My favorite line in the whole book:
page 110. If the phrase "Hey Jude" drew a blank, please exchange this book for a Beatles album. You'll be happier.
These guys know what they're talking about it!

Week 4: Clear
The Value Chain has become a guide for companies.
In order to have a succesfull business a company can follow this as a road map.
The Primary compenets include everything that a business needs to "run" smoothly.
The first is Inbound logistics. In other words getting your product into your door.
the second is operation. The third outbound logistics; in other words, getting your product to a customer.
Marketing is the fourth component which would include sales. Finally support which incompasses customer service and other aspects of customer care.
The secondary components will include the infrastructure of the firm, human resources, technology and purchasing.

Week 3: Clear
This week we talked about networks and all that it includes. Part of the discussion was focused on TCP and UDP encapsulation. I found it very clear to remember and learn.
Networks use this encapsulation when sending data from one place to the next.
TCP stands for transmission control protocol and UDP stands for user datagram protocol. The difference when using these two types of protocol is how much data is guaranteed to be transferred to the destination requested. TCP guarantees your data will arrive safely and in its original full form. UDP only sends what happens to make it to the destination.
TCP guarantees the data will get there by going through one extra step; It's called retransmission. Although retransmission can sometimes slow the process down sometimes a company or PC user will use this for important data like bank records.
UDP does not guarantee the sender the data will arrive fully intact but it does guarantee that it will send it faster. Mr. Nelson said this would be okay to use when sending data like video or music because if anything is missing it wont be noticeable.
So what does retransmission mean? TCP retransmission requires that the receiver notify the sender that all parts were completely received and saved properly. According to msdn.microsoft.com, if the sender does not receive this notification of the packet the retransmission process will start again.
Depending on the data and the time limit a receiver may have, chose your packet protocol wisely. TCP may send the data in complete form it does take longer; UDP sends the data faster but may be missing a few things.

Week 1: Clear
So week one-
The thing that was muddy to me was copyright but now it's clear to me what copyright is. I had never thought about the pictures on the web might belong to a copyright. The Disney you tube video was awesome!Copyright is placed on someone's idea or creation. Anyone, besides the holder of the copyright, who tries to use this material may face big consequences. As students, we must attribute all we use so that we are not penalized for stealing work. The following websites has the copyright law in full: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/
